Ek Chihan Summary in English
“Ek Chihan” (A Grave) is a social realist story written by Hridaya Chandra Singh Pradhan. It tells the story of Ashtanaran, a poor but honest farmer who lives in Kathmandu with his wife Latmaya and their children—Shivnaran, Punnaran, Harshanaran, and Nanithaku. Even though they struggle financially, they live with honesty and dignity.
One day, Ashtanaran becomes very sick. His family tries many traditional treatments, but nothing works. In the end, they take help from Dr. Godatta Prasad, a modern doctor. While visiting their home, the doctor becomes attracted to Nanithaku, which leads to a controversial situation.
After Ashtanaran’s death, the family suffers from financial problems and social pressure. The story shows how the poor are often treated unfairly and how hard life can be when people don’t have money or power. It also talks about caste discrimination and the challenges of staying honest in a corrupt society.
Through this story, the writer shows that we need fairness, respect, and change in society to help everyone live a better life.
