First Law of Thermodynamics

First Law of Thermodynamics falls under heat and thermodynamics portion of class 12 physics. First Law of Thermodynamics Class 12 Physics Notes is designed according to the updated syllabus of 2080 and it covers all the important portion of the chapter. Students can easily prepare their notes, study for test or exams by taking the help of class 12 First Law of Thermodynamics Notes.

  Chapter – 4
First Law of Thermodynamics

Thermodynamic system: Definite quantity of matter bounded by some closed surface is known as system. It may be cylinder containing gas, steam expanding in a turbine. Definite system has definite volume, pressure and temperature. Any things near by the system are the surrounding of that system.

System can or cannot exchange heat to its surrounding. If the wall is made of thermal conducting substance, heat can be exchanged in between the system and surrounding, If the wall is made of insulating material, heat can’t be exchanged in between the system and surrounding. There are mainly three types of systems. They are: (a) Open system (b) Closed system (c) Isolated system.

  Chapter Overview
In this chapter we are going to learn the following concepts, ideas or topics;

  • Work done by Gas
  • Work done in a cyclic process
  • Internal Energy of Gas
  • First Law of Thermodynamics
  • Specific Heat Capacity of Gas
  • Mayer’s Relation
  • Thermodynamics Process

Now let’s move on to the notes of first law of thermodynamics. The PDF given below contains all the notes which includes all the topics mentioned in the chapter overview. We request students to use the notes of First Law of Thermodynamics wisely for the purpose of making notes and preparing for the board examination.

You have to scroll down the PDF to view all the notes of First Law of Thermodynamics. This PDF contains 9 slides in total which contains all the required notes of first law of thermodynamics. It doesn’t contains the numerical problems so if you are searching for the numericals then you’ll find them in the next PDF given below.

Commonly Used Terms in Thermodynamics

  1. Open system: If any system can exchange not only heat energy but also mass to its surrounding, such system is known as open system. For example, air inside a room. Hot air rises up and goes out while cold air enters into the room. Since hot air has more heat energy than cold air, flow of hot air out and cold air in makes the exchange of energy with the surrounding. Again the flow of air makes the exchange of mass
  2. Closed system: If any system can exchange only energy but not mass to its surrounding. such system is known as closed system. For example, any gas containing in a cylinder having conducting walls is an example of closed system. In this system, due to the walls made of conducting material allow to exchange heat energy with the surrounding but since the walls are closed, the mass of the system remains the same.
  3. Isolated system: If any system can neither exchange heat energy nor mass with its surrounding such system is known as isolated system. For example, any gas containing in a cylinder having perfectly insulating walls so that neither energy nor mass can be exchanged.

First Law of Thermodynamics Class 12 Physics Numerical Questions

Those students who want to practice the numericals from first law of thermodynamics chapter can practice the questions given in the PDF below. We have solved the selected numericals which will provide you the method of solving the numericals.

This PDF contains all the important numericals from first law of thermodynamics chapter. In addition to the numericals it also contains all the required formulas used for solving the numerical problems of this chapter.

If you are willing to practise more numerical problems for your examination then you can practice the questions listed below.

  • For hydrogen the molar heat capacities at constant volume and constant pressure are 20.5 J mol K and 28.8 J mol K¹ calculate (i) the heat needed to raise the temperature of 8 g of hydrogen from 10°C to 15°C at constant pressure, (ii) the increase in internal energy of the gas. [molar mass of H2 = 2gm ] [Ans: 576 Joule, 410 Joule]
  • Five moles of an ideal gas are kept at constant temperature of 53°C while the pressure of the gas is increased from 1.00 to 3.00 atm. Calculate work done by the gas. [Ans: 14881 Joule]
  • Air is compressed adiabatically to half its volume. Calculate the percentage change in its temperature. [Ans: 33%]
  • A tyre pumped to a pressure 3.375atm at 27°C suddenly bursts. What is the final temperature (γ=1.5)? [Ans: -273 °C]

These questions are provided for practising purposes. So we haven’t provided the solutions of the numerical problems. However, if you are facing problems while solving these numericals then we request you to copy the questions and paste it in Google to get the solutions of that numericals. If that doesn’t work then you can contact us through our telegram channel to get the solutions.
